Our review

Liraglutide is the previous generation, and it shows. It's a daily injection rather than weekly, the average weight loss is more modest, and the newer drugs have largely overtaken it. What it still offers is the longest real-world safety record in the class, which is genuinely worth something, plus a role as a fallback when the headline options aren't available to you.

How it works

Like semaglutide, liraglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist that curbs appetite and slows digestion. The key practical difference is how quickly it clears your system, which is exactly why it has to be injected every single day instead of once a week.

What the clinical trials show

The SCALE trial evaluated an investigational liraglutide drug product, and the resulting evidence subsequently supported FDA approval of Saxenda®. Average weight loss was around 8 percent of body weight. These figures apply only to the investigational drug product, population, dosing, and conditions studied and do not apply to compounded formulations. Individual outcomes vary.

What it's like to take

A daily injection is a bigger commitment than people expect going in. Seven shots a week instead of one means seven chances to forget, and the routine wears on some patients in a way the weekly drugs never do. The upside is finer control over titration, which occasionally matters for people who are very sensitive to dose changes.

Side effects, honestly

The side-effect profile is the usual digestive lineup, and because you're dosing every day, some people feel the early adjustment more often. It's well understood and manageable, helped along by the sheer number of years of clinical experience behind this drug.

Who it's for, and who it isn't

Liraglutide mostly makes sense as a fallback: when the weekly drugs aren't covered, aren't tolerated, or aren't available, or when a clinician specifically wants the longest safety track record on hand. For most people starting fresh, a weekly option is the better first move.

The cost reality

The published list price for the branded product (Saxenda®) is near $1,349 a month. Savings cards may be available to eligible patients, and an authorized generic of Saxenda® may affect out-of-pocket cost. Confirm current coverage and program terms before treatment.

The bottom line

Liraglutide is a dependable, well-documented option that time has mostly passed by. Choose it for the safety record, or because it's simply what you can get, rather than because it's the most effective tool in the drawer.

The daily shot is a lot

Results were okay, around 12 lbs, but injecting every single day wore me down. Switched to a weekly option after a few months.

Old reliable

Not the strongest, but it's been around forever and my doctor trusted it. Tolerated it well, no surprises.
